The Right Grow Light is the Secret to a Great Indoor Herb Garden

With the fall and winter months quickly approaching many people are preparing to harvest their herb gardens one final time before their gardens sit dormant during the cold winter months but for those gardeners who grow their herbs indoors in their home or greenhouse they can enjoy gardening all year round.

It’s All About the Light

Since plants need light to grow it’s important to always use the right LED grow lights to help insure that your plants grow up to be healthy and strong. The best LED light to use during the initial stages of plant growth is a blue light while the best color to use for encouraging a plant to flower is a red or orange light. Even though both of these colors are imperative for growing plants indoors it’s important to never place plants too close to an LED light because you can easily fry your plant and give them too much light. It’s also important to remember that plants need darkness just like outdoor plants do. You should always turn off your LED lights for at least six hours during a 24 hour period.

What to do And Not to do

As with anything else in life there are important do’s and don’ts that you need to follow in order to be successful with growing an indoor herb garden.

1. Don’t over water – To avoid over watering make sure that you let the soil for each plant dry out first then when you water make sure that you water just enough to soak the root system of a plant before moving onto water the next plant.

2. Pick the right pots – Before buying just any planting pot, make sure that it has holes underneath it for drainage because this will help to insure that your plant stays healthy and flourishes indoors.

3. Don’t over-fertilize – Always make sure to dilute your fertilizer with water that way you can water and fertilize at the same time. If you want to fertilize separately, make sure that you fertilize the soil after you’ve watered, not before.
