The Difference between Tummy Tuck and Liposuction

p4All too often, people who want plastic surgery procedures are confused by the terminology. They assume that they want a particular procedure, only to find out that it won’t really give them the results that they are looking for. If they have a good doctor, they’ll find out before the procedure. If they have a bad doctor, that won’t be the case. One of the common areas where people run into trouble with plastic surgery procedures is a lack of understanding of the difference between a tummy tuck and liposuction.

What Liposuction Really Is

Liposuction involves using what is essentially a tube attached to a vacuum to remove fat from specific areas of the body. Most people get liposuction in their stomach or in the upper part of their legs, but it can be used to remove fat from the arms, under the chin, the buttocks, and other parts of the body. It’s a sculpting tool, in a way, and is not used to create weight loss or to ‘fix’ a person’s all-over appearance. It is used through small incisions in the targeted area, as opposed to a larger incision.

What a Tummy Tuck Involves

Tummy tucks are not the same as liposuction. A tummy tuck involves an incision that is made into the stomach area. Then, excess skin is pulled and removed. Once that has been done, the incision is stitched closed. There is the risk of infection, but most people have no real trouble with the surgery other than it takes a while to recover and there will be some pain for a few days. Tummy tucks don’t treat other areas the way liposuction does, and they require more downtime after the procedure.

Overall, it’s best to make sure that you completely understand the procedure that you will be having. If you find a doctor who doesn’t explain things to you well, find another doctor who you’re more comfortable with before you undergo any kind of surgery or other medical procedure.
